The WASSAC (Winnebago Area Small School Athletic Conference) tournament is being held this weekend at WLA. It started today with first and second round games being played by both boys and girls. The boys and girls on the Academy's varsity basketball teams each hosted a different team from the area lutheran grade schools. These students left class during the day to go and host their teams. I think this was a good idea because like the visitation of students yesterday it is a good recruiting tool for WLA. Many of the students from these various grade schools don't come to WLA , but having a role model from WLA can enhance their weekend experience and may influence some to attend the Academy.
WLA's boys basketball team had another exciting game tonight with cross-town rival St. Mary's Springs. The boys team won 41-38 in a defensive battle. The Vikings managed to pull ahead late in the 4th quarter with clutch free throw shooting by Mike Schraufnagel. This victory puts the Vikings into better position for the playoffs as they may now be considered for the 3rd seed in their region after being projected 7th.
